Item Description:
I am pleased to offer this
original
and
old
hand-made Japanese sword, or
Nihonto
, brought back from WWII. The sword is a
Shinshinto tanto
ca. 1800s with vivid
Choji Hamon
and is in high quality samurai mounts. The blade and the mountings are in
Near MINT
condition. The sword features a ridgeless
hira-zukuri
construction. It has a blade length of 8 inches (20 cm). The hada is a well-grained and tight
ko-itame
hada
. The hamon is a Bizen Ichimonji-style
juka choji midare
that is present the length of the blade through the kissaki where it ends in a
ichimonji-kaeri
style boshi. The hamon is interspersed with
nie
activities as well as
ashi
and
yo
. The tang is
mumei
, or unsigned. Based on the shape and workmanship, the sword looks to be from a school like the
Hosokawa
school which was active in the 1800s and worked in a variety of styles.
The blade comes in original high-quality Samurai mountings. They are in
Near MINT
condition.
The tsuka is wrapped in bamboo with external menuki of
hishi
diamond design. The tanto is mounted
aikuchi
style without a tsuba.
The saya is is black and shows very little wear, retaining roughly
97-98%
original finish. The blade is in
Near MINT
condition. There are no nicks, little to no rust, and few scratches along the blade’s length. There is one small lateral ware. There are no major flaws like hagire.
Given the age, superior workmanship, condition, and vivid choji hamon, I think this tanto would be an
outstanding
addition for a collector of Japanese swords or WWII militaria.
