    Item Description:
I am pleased to offer this
    original
    and
    old
    hand-made Japanese sword, or
    Nihonto
, brought back from WWII. The sword is a
    Shinto
katana, ca. 1600s, from the well-known
    Chikuzen Nobukuni
    school and is
    samurai-mounted
. The blade and the mountings are in
    Very Good
condition. The sword has a blade length of 26.5 inches (67 cm) and shows a straighter curvature. It features a well-grained
    itame
hada, or wood-grain patterned surface steel that mixes with a burl
    mokume
hada. The hamon is a Soshu-style
    gunome midare
hamon of undulating peaks. The hamon is present the length of the blade through the kissaki where it ends in a thick
    maru
    boshi with some
    hakikake
    . There are activities like
    sunagashi
    and
    yubashiri
    in and along the hamon.
    The tang is
    mumei
    , or unsigned, and
    o-suriage
, or shortened. Based on the shape and workmanship, the sword looks to be from the well-known and highly regarded
    Chikuzen Nobukuni
school working in modern day Fukuoka. They were highly active in the early to late 1600’s. This sword looks to date to the mid to late 1600’s. Chikuzen Nobukuni swords were sought out be samurai for their high quality craftsmanship.
The blade comes in original Samurai mountings. They are in
    Very Good
condition. The tsuka features a brown silk ito and custom menuki. The tsuba is a nice iron tsuba with four accompanying seppas, one metal and three placeholder seppas. The saya (scabbard) is leather covered wood. The saya shows some a few small areas of missing finish, retaining roughly
    90-92%
of original finish. The blade is in
    Very Good
condition. There are a few small nicks along the edge in the
    monouchi
. There are also some small scattered spots of rust and some small scratches along its length. There are a few scattered
    ware
along the blade, including one lateral ware in the
    shinogi-ji
that is 2-3 inches. Given this swords history and craftsmanship, I think this piece would be an excellent addition for a collector of WW2 militaria or Japanese swords.
